Before Battle by witchdollie Before Battle by witchdollie
I am often inspired by my religion (Santeria). Unfortunately, finding models for such inspiration has proven to be more difficult then I would like.

This image depicts the Orisha, Oggun in a moment of peace before battle.

Oggun owns everything made of metal and is a fierce warrior of brute strength. No Orisha has ever gone to battle without invoking the powers and protection of this mighty warrior. Oggun is also the personification of ethics, justice, technology, and war and his nature is both vital and violent. He is an extremely hard worker by nature and works ceaselessly with little rest and because of that he was entrusted by Olodumare to create civilization.

There is a tale that Oggun became tired of everyone's demands and left civilization for the forest, without his metals and tools civilization came to a halt. All the other Orishas pleaded with him to return............to no avail. Finally it was Oshun who lured him out of the forest and back to civilization with her beauty and sensuality along with her weapon of choice, honey. Life for the people of Earth could finally again progress. It is Eleggua who opens all roads and Oggun who clears them with his machete.

You can see why though. A displeased Oggun is something that would scare any model. Though this is simply lovely! I love that you included his tools as well. Before you ask I practice Vodoun not Santeria, but I find all the art of Santeria more comforting. There seems to be more of a sense of personal interaction between the artist and the inspiration.

Love Your Oggun. I myself am working on a similar project for both the Orishas & Nkisis but like you stated finding the right kind of stock is hard.
